AlgaeRevive – Environmental Data for AI-Assisted Black Sea Monitoring

P-United collected, analysed and prepared environmental data for training Algae Sense Tool, an AI-based online instrument intended to monitor, forecast and analyse algal blooms in the Black Sea. The work was delivered under AlgaeRevive, funded by the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme 2021–2027.

Challenge

Analysing and forecasting algal blooms requires the integration of long-term records on phytoplankton, water quality and marine environmental conditions. Our task was to turn diverse environmental datasets into a structured foundation for analysis and AI training.

Approach

We systematised and analysed data on species composition, biomass and bloom intensity alongside physicochemical and oceanographic parameters. We examined phytoplankton communities and assessed the ecological integrity and stability of the coastal ecosystem and associated marine habitats.

Outcome

We prepared a data foundation for the development and training of Algae Sense Tool, linking biological indicators with marine environmental conditions. Our contribution supports the analysis of ecosystem responses to environmental pressures and the development of AI-assisted monitoring.
